Oak and Acorn Banner

Are you looking for an autumn themed banner to make for your home? Oak and Acorn Banner was designed for Quiltmania magazine and was featured in their fall issue of last year. Now you can purchase the pattern here in our online catalog. Look in the appliqué section to find it.

The size is 21″ x 48″. I used a hand appliqué method to make the blocks but the directions give fusible yardage and the templates are reversed too. The fabrics used were my leftovers from the Autumn Splendor collection by Kaufman fabrics.

Shimmering Sea by Jinny Beyer

Shimmering Sea quilt

Do you like paper piecing or have you tried this method?

I have just finished this quilt top designed by Jinny Beyer for a client from one of the southwestern states. You can see a corner of it above. Each block has 45 strips of graduated tonals. Beautiful!

My client wanted a king size which measures 106″ before quilting. The original size of the kits measure around 62″ and use 16 11″ x 11″ blocks. This king has 64 blocks or a set of 8 x 8 blocks.

New Pattern-Dresden Garden

Do you love Dresden Plate blocks? The instructions for our block have quick turned edges and are appliqued to the block background with a blanket stitch. Then the fusible circle is added with a blanket stitch too. Add the flower, chain and plain squares and you have a gorgeous quilt that can be made in full, queen and king sizes.

Dresden Garden was first published in Fons & Porter’s Love of Quilting Jan/Feb issue. Clothworks Textiles provided the fabric-don’t you love the green and blue dots and mauve swirls? You can find Dresden Garden in the appliqué section of our catalog.

New Quilting Software from Electric Quilt

Have you checked out the newest version of Electric Quilt software-version 7? I just received my copy and I want to share with you a new feature they have added.

Daylilies

Now you can use their software to import photos like the one above I just took this morning in my garden and turn it into a quilt. You can print it on fabric for a memory quilt or create a one patch quilt using shapes like a square with colors based on your photo.

You can even use the photo for border ideas or trace the object and make it into an appliqué pattern. Electric Quilt has added photo editing tools to let you crop, resize and modify the photos.

Update for Gardener’s Delight

Gardener's Delight Quilt

I am happy to show you the completed quilt of Gardener’s Delight! I’ve been working hard on it during the month of May and I finished the binding this afternoon.

The pattern is running in 8 issues of Ruby, the online magazine for women. The May issue gave the first block photo and instruction of the Tulip block. In a few weeks the July/August issue will be sent out with the Coneflower Block which represents summer. September/October will has the Aster Block and November/December will have the Holly Block. Then following in the new year will be 4 more issues covering the rest of the quilt pattern.

It’s been a fun quilt to make! You can subscribe to Ruby at the upper right corner of our blog and order past issues if you’ve missed the May block. I used hand appliqué on my version and it would go alot faster if you like to use fusible web appliqué. The size of the quilt is 47″ x 64″-nice for a throw or a wall hanging is what I will use it for.

Scrappy Pinwheel Flowers

We hope you have had a wonderful Memorial Day! We spent it at my sister’s home with family. I don’t have any ” quilty” news today so here’s the potato salad that’s a favorite in our family. Its been handed down from my husband’s mother so we’ve been enjoying it for years!

Old Fashioned Potato Salad

6 medium potatos, cooked and sliced, 1 1/2 cups cooked carrots, 1 Tablespoon chopped onion, 3 Tablespoons vinegar, 1 teaspoon salt, 2 Tablespoons salad oil, 1 teaspoon sugar, 1 Tablespoon prepared mustard, 4 hard-cooked eggs, sliced, 2/3 cup miracle whip, 1/2 cup milk

Mix together the vinegar, oil, salt, sugar and mustard well. Combine the sliced and cooked potatoes and carrots in a bowl and pour the marinade over the vegetables. Toss well and chill 2-3 hours. Add onion and sliced eggs. Combine miracle whip and milk and stir into the salad and mix well.

Serves 6 people. This can be made a day ahead of time and the leftovers are wonderful! I usually doubled the recipe for our family when the kids (especially our son) were growning up.
